Calafate is the doorstep to one of the most wonderful natural monuments in our planet: the Perito Moreno glacier and The Glaciers National Park. This unique prodigy of nature groups 47 glaciers, mountains, luxurious forests, pristine lakes, and endless extensions. It was declared Natural Monument of World’s Heritage by UNESCO in 1981.
Visitors catch their breath when arriving at the majestic Lago Argentino (125 kms long and 20 across) and, finally, at the very feet of this impressive glacier. It looks like a white giant sleeping in an overwhelming silent and quiet landscape, which suddenly wakes up and fills the air with cracks and strains.
Until recently, the Perito Moreno Glacier was one of the few in the world still advancing. It used to block a fjord until – roughly once every four years - the ice would break under the pressure of the water built up behind, causing enormous waves and huge icebergs sailing along the lake. Presumably due to global warming, nowadays, the glacier continues slowly moving forward and letting loose "smaller" – though still huge – blocks of ice at a more frequent rate; constantly feeding this unique and imposing show about nature’s awesome forces.
Apart from the magnificent views, it is possible to trek with clamps over the white and different shades of blue ice or enjoy a boat ride to visit the Upsala Glacier. Also, in this magic region, it is possible to get acquainted with the wool producing routine and discover the amazing extensions of endless plains and skies joining fabled horse trekking expeditions.
For well fit climbers, bespoken small expeditions depart from El Chalten towards the continental ice on the border with Chile, the Perito Moreno National Park and the for ever respectful and legendary Fitz Roy.
